Hatch Will Oppose Any ‘Gang of Six Deal’ That Includes Tax Hikes

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) poses a significant obstacle to any bipartisan deficit reduction deal in the Senate that would raise taxes, according to Senate aides and activists.

Hatch would have significant say over any deficit-reduction as ranking Republican on the Senate Finance panel, which has jurisdiction over taxes, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

He told conservative activists shortly before the April recess that he would oppose any deficit-reduction package that raises taxes, period.

“He has stressed no tax increases,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, a prominent anti-tax group, speaking of assurances Hatch made at a recent Tax Day event with conservatives. “That’s what he told me when he was at the April 14 press conference. Hatch was there and stressed no tax increases. Period.”

      Tax hikes, shmax hikes. The one real issue that demands our total focus is the spending level. Put it back to the 18-20% range and set the tax levels to match the spending. Stop the spending growth, stop the borrowing.

        Jack, I am 100% with you. My first thought was, "Thanks, Orin, but let's see what you DO, not what you SAY." I trust none of them. Besides, preserving tax cuts without controlling spending means nothing.

    Let us hope Senator Hatch and the real Republicans can prevail as the nation seems to be on a path to self destruction. Why can't someone say, "If we don't change these benefit programs all of you will get nothing as a result of the collapse!" The people do not understand it is now or never and what "never" really means.

      Why is it that Obama can claim that Ryan's budget cuts to medicare will force the elderly to eat dog food while everybody cheers. But there is no mention of the $500 billion Obamacare will cut from medicare?

        I read that Ryan's plan would actually increase medicare benefits over time, the only thing that is being asked of the seniors older than 55 is to work anywhere from a month longer to a year longer and the year of retirement is calculated out for those that are younger. Seems like a very small sacrifice and I like to think that most seniors (I'm 53 and fully grasp the situation and have no problem working longer) are smart enough not to believe what Obama says. During the Obamacare discussion, Ryan seemed to be the ONLY one in the room that read and fully understood what was in that bill. He is NOT some little accountant.

        This might be the most common line of attack of them all. We’ve seen many versions of the claim that the health care bill cuts Medicare by $500 billion. That’s actually a reduction in the future growth of spending over 10 years, not a slashing of the current budget, as we’ve pointed out. To put that in context: The Congressional Budget Office estimates that federal Medicare spending will be $519 billion this year, and $929 billion in fiscal year 2020, even with these cuts. The health care law calls for a reduction in the currently projected growth of federal outlays of about 7 percent over the decade.

        Claims that these cuts will "hurt the quality of our care" — like the one below from the 60 Plus Association — ignore the fact that the law adds some benefits to Medicare, such as free preventive care and more prescription drug coverage. And the law (section 3601) says that guaranteed Medicare benefits can’t be reduced. But one group of seniors — those on Medicare Advantage plans, about 10 million beneficiaries — will likely lose the extra benefits they receive, such as gym memberships or spare eyeglasses. These private plans currently get paid more by the government per enrollee than traditional Medicare, and the law brings those payments in line with the regular program, over time. 60 Plus ran ads similar to this one, which targets Rep. Steve Kagen of Wisconsin, against 15 other House Democrats.

          There is no such thing as free preventative careor presciption drug coverage some body has to pay some where down the line, so happens the tax payer gets the shaft.

    Isn't it amazing…every time the government want to cut the budget, they hit Medicare and Social Security!! so they can hurt the greatest number of people!! The Social Security program could never have gone broke, with over a Trillion in it, so the Senate began by "borrowing" from it…hundreds of Billions, finally Johnson put it in the general fund, so it could be spent!!! Pay it Back!!!!

    Cut the WAR…Save Hundreds of BILLIONS per Month!! Far more than they can save by cutting Medicare and SS!!! Ahhhh but they wouldn't want to do that…can't destroy this country, without wiping it out financially!!!

      Because of the government "raiding" social security over the years, illegally, I might add, they should pay it back……………..let them use the "unused bail out money" and PAY IT BACK. It is robbing all those who already paid into it……….and now, because we are broke, thsoe who did pay into it as an "insurance policy", havent been given a cost of living increase in three years……………so some seniors probably ARE eating dog food and this is on OBAMA…….Seniors are now eating dog food because of Obama……………his plane trips, his golf games, his wife's trips, his date nights, I could go on and on. If he cared about his country, he'd show us by example……………….I'll bet Sara Palin wouldn't be unaware of her fellow citizens……………………..

    I wish people would understand that it isnt SS breaking this system, it is the medicaide people who are not contributing to the system that are breaking it. Why doesnt congress see this and stop this debacle from going on and on. cut these no-account people off this dole and the SS system would be ok. These illegals on medicaide make more each month than I do and I paid into the system for 45 years of my working life. This is very unfair and should be stopped in its tracks as of yesterday.

    Wake up, Congressmen, and do the job you were elected to do. Save our country.

      We’ll just quickly note that illegal immigrants are broadly disqualified from collecting benefits from government programs, according to U.S. Code, with only limited exceptions. Those exceptions are:

      Emergency medical care (which includes emergency labor and delivery)

      Emergency disaster relief that is provided for the short term and is not a cash payment

      Limited immunizations and testing, and treatment of symptoms of communicable diseases

      Certain community programs, such as soup kitchens or crisis counseling, as specified by the Attorney General

      Limited housing or community development assistance to those already receiving it in 1996

    I commend Senator Hatch for supporting no new taxes; however, much of what is done in Washington is a smoke screen to confuse and mislead the voters. Now that they have over run this nation with massive numbers of foreign workers and illegal invaders, they attempt to cut all the programs. I support the cuts, but not the foreign workers, or the illegal trash that has crossed our borders. Senator Hatch, the Mormon Leadership, Romney, and the Chamber of Commerce had given amnesty to the illegal aliens in Utah. Am I supposed to be amused that these elected officials really give a damn about the American people? The RINOs are just like the Democrats, and these clowns have to be voted out of office, even if the elections are rigged. We are being played for suckers, and uninformed voters are aiding in our own destruction. Senator Hatch is a RINO, and we need more people like Senator Mike Lee.

    Just stop these baby factorys and it will help.Stop all these hand outs to these illegals and they might go home.These baby factorys are people that are having babys kike shelling corn and every one put on wellfare is 1500.00 per month plus food and housing.One woman was reported as having 8 children and still in her 20s. this adds up to 144000.00 per year. sounds like good money for having sex.it didn't cost her any thing for having these children.This has to stop when a woman makes the same misstake twice then she shouldn't be allowed the third.You can call me what you want to if the woman is here illegally then she don't get a second mistake.We need to wake up these bunch of thiving dumb asses in washington dc and try to get some sort of control of the government or control of these damnlying thives.     I am no economic expert, but I understand there are bills that must be paid and bills that can be postponed. Fourteen Trillion Dollars should stand as the limit.

    Senator Hatch I am with you 100% but unfortunately the speaker isn't. He is more interested in backing Obama then he is his own constituents. I would suggest that you get Issa, Cantor, and the seventeen freshmen behind you for this drill. Col West is an excellent POINT man for your operation as he will not take any crap from Obama and that is what you are going to need to get the rest to go along with you. Some one has to stop this mad man and I thank you for being the man that wants to get the ball started
