Police Officer Beats Man for Filming…Police

A Las Vegas police officer under investigation for the videotaped beating of a man in March violated several Metropolitan Police Department policies, an internal investigation found.

Mitchell Crooks’ complaint about officer Derek Colling’s excessive force was sustained, Deputy Chief Gary Schofield said Friday.

The specific policy violations will not be released until the case is finalized.

Crooks, 36, received a letter from the Internal Affairs Bureau notifying him of the findings earlier this week.

He said he was pleasantly surprised.

“It seems like they’re saying he was guilty, which is what I’ve been saying,” Crooks said. “I really hope he gets fired.”

Colling has been on paid suspension since April 1.

Oh, one more thing, most police use video and voice to protect themselves from scum. And not all police are in a union!

I was arrested in La Grange Missouri (pop 900) for taking a picture of a cop. Terrible's Mark twain Casino was being "Protected" for citizens.

I feel for all intent and purposes most Cops are good and go by the book! Then again, you have those power hungry cops who give the good ones a bad name and rap. All one needs to do is to look at the news, now and then, and see those cops who go bad whether it be for finance gain or just superiority! This incident was uncalled for! The cop could have asked for a rational explanation before going ballistic! The old saying, "one rotten apple spoils the whole darn bunch". It is not only in police work but in society in general! Until we(America) get back to common sense morals and judgment;we will continue to have these type incidents! Cops have a difficult job at best;then again, they could use some sensitivity training! Why is it necessary to keep those cops on the payroll? If guilty;prosecute! If not, retroactive pay! Enough said! Let's see what happens! Prayerfully, justice will prevail!

FIRST THIS GUY WAS A TROUBLE MAKER, AND IF HE WAS ON SOMEONE ELSE IS PROPERTY WITHOUT PERMISSION HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVE A SUMMONS. THIS GUY FOR WHATEVER REASON SET THIS COP UP AND SOME OF THESE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHEN TO TAKE DIRECTIONS. THIS IS THE TYPE OF GUY WHO WOULD LEAD PEOPLE TO RIOT.

Beating up on defenseless people is way less dangerous than chasing after some real felons! The price of minor traffic violations has gotten so high that many people don't have a prayer of paying them. Why should a ticket for an illegal U-Turn come to more than $200 ?

I hope the victim sues the hell out of the LVPD, and wins big. The cop who beat the victim should not only be fired,he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Police have cameras in their vehicles recording the stops they make. there is no reason why a citizen with a camera filming the police should be hassled, unless the one doing the filming is actively interfering with a police officer doing his duty. If the cops aren't doing anything wrong, why are they angry about being filmed? What are they afraid of?

I didn't know it was illegal to video an officer in public. I hope the cop loses his job and goes to jail for first degree assault.

  • CountryIsGoing2hell

So they can film us, but we can't film them?

  • CountryIsGoing2Hell

I totally agree that the cops used excessive force and that they had no right to do what they did, even if they thought the guy was "trespassing." I suspect that there had to have been more to this previously. Watch the video again. What I don't understand is that when the cop FIRST asks him if he lives here, Crooks says "Nope." So, they go after him and then Crooks is screaming that he lives there. I think the cops were totally out of line and should be repremanded, up to and including losing their jobs. But I also think that it should be investigated to see if this Crooks guy had provoked it, possibly from previous encounters.

Our police and sheriff departments are very independent both from each other and of the general public. They are a club of their own and it is not surprising that these officers put themselves above the law. It is important that these Officers be aware that the public does have the right to monitor them and they work for the people. They are beginning to act like politicians who believe that they are above the ones who put them there in the first place.

To the retired deputy from LA. Hi neighbor ! Lee Baca is at the root of the corruption at LASD. However, the downward spiral came when Block was Sheriff. The ACLU and consent decrees have forced the hiring of absolute morons and thugs! I can’t tell you how often I have had to teach deputies criminal law. They are ignorant.

But, beatings and executing people by deputies goes to the juvenile delinquents they have hired. Read the Office Of Independent Review reports, subscribe to Injusticeeverywhere and copblock to see how badly people are being abused by
those we hire to protect us.

I used to despise Don Jackson, but after seeing the corruption he has videoed, I say more power to him, I wish these people were more visible to the public.
If you watched Rodney King on Celebrity Rehab, I changed my mind about him too. He is no worse than some cops out there.

THis officer should be fired and never work in the police force ever again. Abuse of the badge that gives all police officers a bad name and ammo for the rappers to record obscence cop killing songs.

  • Wolf-Talker

    Absolute power corrupts absolutely!
Police officers who wear the uniform of any city or state are supposed to be public servants.

Crooks got what he deserved, for obstructing a police officer. That camera of his could well be a weapon, and he should comply when told so, instead of resisting an arrest. I bet the charges would be dropped because there is no case here. Cooling was doing his job, and so is every cop in this country. If you don't respect them, you get what you deserved.

  • Linda

That officer should have been suspended without pay. Since he is suspended with pay and found guilty he should have to pay back the money.

  • Rob

This is why you never lie to a cop. He could have prevented this by telling the officer he lived at the premises. They should have kept the obstructing justice charge on his ass and fire the bully cop.

  • james stead

this idiot cop violated this guys rifghts ! he should be fired and taken to court for this abuse!! or shot!

  • Spooky_t

I sent an email to the police dept. ([email protected]). I haighly recommend that all of you do too.

  • wlitchford

This is exactly the type of police behavior that generates distrust from the general public. It is a problem that is endemic to too many police forces. Since local police forces seem to be unable to rein in their officers, perhaps a national effort should be made to protect the citizens from these out of control police forces.
