The head of an immigration reduction advocacy organization is encouraged that Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) is making an effort to demonstrate his concern about the cost of illegal immigration to the taxpayers of his state.
August 10, just three days before he formally entered the presidential race, Perry sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asking for nearly $350 million to cover the costs that Texas has incurred for allowing illegal immigrants to enter the U.S. and utilize taxpayer-funded resources, including state prisons and county jails.
Perry has been criticized by border enforcement advocates for being too lenient on illegal immigration issues. Roy Beck is founder and president of NumbersUSA, which recently gave Perry a “D-minus” on its immigration enforcement report card. But he thinks asking for reimbursement is a move in the right direction.
