Texas Bill to Require Sonograms Before Abortions

In a victory for anti-abortion advocates, Texas will join the ranks of states that require doctors to perform a sonogram before conducting an abortion.

Gov. Rick Perry, a conservative Republican, made the bill, which the Legislature passed on Thursday, a priority and is expected to sign it. The bill requires a doctor to conduct a sonogram at least 24 hours before an abortion and to give the woman the opportunity to see the results and hear the heartbeat of the fetus. Though the woman can choose not to view the images and hear the heartbeat, the doctor must describe what the sonogram shows, including the existence of legs, arms and internal organs.

“This will be one of the strongest pieces of sonogram legislation in the nation,” the bill’s author, Representative Sid Miller, a Republican from Stephenville, told reporters. Mr. Miller predicted the measure would “save numerous unborn lives.”

    go to google and check out what a baby looks like at 20 weeks… the governor in Ind said they can have an abortion at 20 weeks…. I sent him the pictrue but Ibet it dint do any good…if the women of american paid as much attention of trying not to get pregnant as they did abortions they would use there brain and use a pill… now days NOT one women would have to get pregnant with all the pills they have to use… now if they would use there brain we wouldnt have to fight about abortions… if you have the time to have sex you have the time to use the pill… if they made it as easy to get the pills as they do to get an abortion then they would be doing something.

      Oh how right you are. I think the only time there should be a leagel abortion is if a live is in danger or rape. If you can't keep your pants up, take the consequences. Their are so many Fam. out there that would like to have Babies and can't have them, so why not give them up for Adoption instead of killing them, or better yet take preventetive messures. Don't spend other Peoples money for your lazyness or stupidety.

        Helga, you are right on the money. Why should we pay for their stupidity. I can see if someones' health was at risk, or it was a rape or incest, then that is a different story. but it would have to be proven about the rape or incest, health problems would show. How dare this administration and some congress and senate think they can just do what they want with our money. Unless many of them or their children went throught this planned murderer clinic. I say what I mean and mean what I say. enough is enough with this murdering government. many families would adopt, gilibrand from New York is for adoption and abortion, so you tell me who are the idiots, they flip flop, they do not make any sense. too much money they are counting in their heads. they all have to go.

        I disagree thoroughly with your stand and that is because I am against abortion under any circumstances. I invite you to look at the last sentence of the Bill of Rights-Fifth Amendment. There you will see that no one (unborn included) is to never to be deprived of "life, Liberty or Property' without due process of law, There are no expceptions therein.

        If you disagree with me or others do I invite you to instruct me accordingly.

    It really makes me mad that people are so irresponsible when it comes to marriage and sex. "if it feels good, do it." seems to be the law of the land. And then they kill their babies or have the taxpayers pay to raise even more irresponsible little people.

    The Government wont come right out and say it but it is far cheaper to abort a baby than it is to support that person through their entire life on Welfare, food stamps, medicaid and numerous other give away programs that they have set up for the people who actually work to pay for.

      The world does not need more people. We are overpopulated and we can't take care of the children that we have. Millions of children go hungry and are homeless. We simply don't need any more children.

        Kayliegh, I read your post with interest. There are a lot of places to get birth control. And for the young unmarried girls and women maybe they should use the word abstenance. To kill a baby for concenience is wrong. I am proud to live in a state that takes abortion seriously. One of the Tec Commanments is Thou shalt not kill.

        As far as a woman being allowed to get an abortion because of rape…I think she should have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was raped. To much of this hanky panky screwing around on husbands and then screaming rape.What is this pro choice anyway. Why should a woman be allowed to choose if she wants to kill or not. Does she think God allows this? If any woman could choose to kill a small defenseless child that can't fight back, she has no feelings for life and could kill anyone. So I say, let the killers go and keep the babies. That should keep the population at an even pace. Get rid of a lot of libs too…LOL

    While I am Christian I am also Pro-Choice, but I think it should be a requirement to take a class on Birth Control before having an abortion. (unless it was a rape case)

    This would at least ensure that the woman knows her options to prevent herself from having another unwanted pregnancy.

    Requiring a class on options to abortion would also be a good idea, as has been said there are many people waiting to adopt a baby.

    As to why I am a pro-choice Christian, I personally don't believe a fetus is "alive" until it draws it's first breath based on biblical teachings, it says that God "breathed the breath of Life into man" when he created Adam, does it not?

    I believe this is when you become a "person" and before that the fetus is just an empty vessel waiting to receive 'the breath of life and a soul at birth. Before that it's no more a person than any other tumor or growth on or in a human body.

      While I am happy for you that you consider yourself a Christian, you contradict yourself stating you are pro-choice. Your knowledge of creationism is exceptionally correct. God did breath life into man. In the process of creating man He created the body which has been wonderfully woven together and all systems needed to sustain life are reproduced and function and grow as the child within the uterus grows. Watching a songram at the first inkling of pregnancy shows the sustaining systems in place and functioning; the heart beating, fingers, hands, arms legs, head…all wonderfully and uniquely in place. Who are you to decide when God breathes life into that baby? Were you there at the creation of man? Did you get to put a "time stamps" on a fetus when it is living for your understanding or acceptance? It's exactly the same questions God asked Job. You are making yourself into a god and that is quite dangerous. Ask yourself this question, though; "Am I glad my mom decided not to abort me?" Simply put, the pro-choice line doesn't give any "choice" to the baby; just answers whether or not the mom wants to take responsibility for her actions. As for rape cases, due to the trauma impact on the woman, a pregnancy occurs is less than 1% of the cases. Psychologically these situations can really affect the woman. It has been proven, though, those who "choose" to abort have suffered a greater degree of psychological damage than those who have carried the child full term. Maybe you should consider whether your a Christian or just religious!

      I hate to burst your bubble dear, but the fetus is alive before it takes the first breath. The sonagrams show movement, heart beating, the baby sometimes sucking its thumb. The fetus is viable after five or six months. I had four children, the baby moves around and kicks. They are a gift and a blessing from God.

      Your statements PROVE that you need someone to help you interpret scripture. I pray that you get to a confirmed, biblical pastor and counsel with him/her.

      A child, in the womb, is in amniotic fluid thus it does not breath; it is fed oxygen thru the umbilical cord.

      Do you think a child just lays in the womb, lifeless, until it passes out of the mother's body.

      How old are you and how long have you been a 'believer?'

      Get some basic books on the human body and find a Christian counselor. I think you have been mislead or just not knowledgeable of these issues.

      The breath of life (oxygen) is found in the blood. This is why Yahweh declares in Leviticus 17:11 that life of the flesh is in the blood.

      May I suggest that you visit a hospital, and ask to see a ultrasound, or listen to a fetus's heartbeat in the womb. Both, indicate there is a living breathing individual, inside the mothers body. What more proof do you need to define a life?

    Another thought for those people who are concerned about the cost of the public for unplanned babies.

    Where are the statistics for the pubic cost for counseling and the medication for the women who have had abortions?

    Where are the statistics for the suicide rate for women who have had abortions?

    Why is it that the pro abortionists are so angry that there is a God and angry and so ready to call those who believe and express their faith nasty names??? Yes, why is that?

    My comment is rather simple. Once the baby has been concieved the mother has her decision made. She chose to get pregnant. It isn't her body anymore. It belongs to her and the child she is growing in it and it deserves to live. Once the baby is born then she makes the choice of having sex and risking pregnancy again…That is when it is her choice, not after conception!

    Great for Texas Gov. & having pg woman see sonogram or listen to her baby's heart beat. She would never have an abortion–the killing of these children would end dramatically. As far as Planned Parenthood-our tax dollars should NOT go towards their doing abortions–free mammograms YES
