Nearly half of America’s public schools did not meet federal achievement standards set by the No Child Left Behind Law which took effect a decade ago, according to a national report released Thursday.
The Center on Education Policy found that 43,000 schools (48%) did not make “adequate yearly progress” in 2011.
The failure rates vary from state to state, with a low of 11% in Wisconsin to a high of 89% in Florida. In Virginia the failure rate rests at 62%.
While the rates are below predictions made earlier this year, Education Secretary Arne Duncan says it’s still an alarming trend.
