GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) on Sunday accused President Obama of running the nation like a “banana republic.”
Bachmann during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press said the administration had failed to cut spending and had put the nation in greater debt.
“We’re acting like Greece and like Italy, and that’s what people are frustrated with. They want us to act like a first-world nation,” said Bachmann. “Not like what president Barack Obama is doing. He’s acting like we’re a banana republic. We’ve got to get our act together, and stop spending money that we don’t have.”
When asked by host David Gregory if it was fair to compare the U.S. with the eurozone’s debt situation, Bachmann doubled-down on her comments.
“The decision that Barack Obama is making, is acting like a banana republic. It’s absolutely irresponsible what President Obama is doing to get behind measures to increase spending to such a level that we’re going in to debt, $1.5 trillion every year,” she said.
Bachmann also discussed a tense exchange with rival candidate Newt Gingrich during last Thursday’s GOP debate.
