Romney Says He Doesn’t Want to Debate Gingrich ‘One On One’

Say, doesn’t this remind people of another debate challenge? One in which one candidate bet another a bunch of money as an intimidation tactic? Remember when the man who offered the bet claimed a refusal was an admission of error? Good times, good times:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Thursday spurned a challenge from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, for a one-on-one debate in the run-up to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, but he dismissed the notion, suggested by Mr. Gingrich, that he was afraid to participate in such a faceoff.

“We’ve had many occasions to debate together, and we’ll have more — I presume quite a few more — before this is finished,” Mr. Romney told the Associated Press. “But I’m not going to narrow this down to a two-person race while there are still a number of other candidates that are viable, important candidates in the race. I want to show respect to them.”

What a chicken, Obama will folow this pattern too

Thank God Obama is a one-term president!!

    • J. H. Brown

Do you think they should have a debate and leave out all the other candidates. This wouldn't be right. JH Brown

      • luvmyusa

Newt wanted to debate Mitt on his negative ads against him, that have been given 4 pinnocho's by FactCheck.Newt in 2012. Defeat BO. We can not afford another McCain Jr.

  • dingbat36

    Ho Hum Mitt.

  • http://www.libertyandhope.blogspot.com/ xRedfoxx

Why would we want to watch two liberal candidates fight it out for the conservative nomination? LOL Both of these guys rate very low on the Conservative Scorecard.

What a great man? I agree with Mitt Romney that it would be wrong to hold a debate and leave out all the other
Republican candidates that are running for President.. As uaual, Mitt is showing good ethics, passed on from
his great father, George Romney, President of American Motors. He is a great husband, father, business genius
and best of all a great Christian and has lived the Christian life. J H. Brown

You J.H. Brown, are an azzhat to admire Romney like that, He is the biggest 2 faced running!!!

  • Kathy

Personally, I would like to see a debate between these two. Gingrich calls it as he sees it and a leader should. This pc business has to go far away. No one can really understand what anyone is trying to say, but Gingrich makes himself clear to the consternation of even his own party. As for his past, I don't care about it. How many of us have situations we would rather not see publicized and how many things have we been forgiven for? If Gingrich can lead us out of obamaville, he should have the chance.

    • Rich

I agree Kathy, and If Romney is afraid to defend himself how can we expect him to defend us and the United States.

  • RobinPC

Romney is a white Obama. Opps there is that nasty race card, but for which candidate? Romney is not a Christian, he is a Mormon and if you don't know the difference, then shame on you. Maybe some of those Mormon boys should ring your door bell. Black Obama adopted white Romney's health care ideas, so what is the difference between the two? The name on the party does not change the intents of the heart.

    • Retired Major

So when it comes right down to it RobinPC, you're just an average bigot. Mormons are good enough to fight and die for America, but not serve as Commander-in-Chief.

      • GUY

Thats right Major…Mormons are a cult!

  • http://Yahoo Monty

Mitt is not the guy you people think he is. He did a interview last year and stated that he saw no problem with the individual mandate in obama care and there were many things in obama care he supported as well as the individual mandate. Also when he said “on his first day in office he would via e executive order overturn obamacare where is his consitutional authority to get rid of obamacare like that. Ill tell you where THERE IS NONE! So all of you supporting the man be careful what you wish for you might gust get it and screw the rest of us in the proses. And no im not a ron paul supporter i just cant stand mitt for brains romney the progressive that he is.

  • Kenny

A note to Mitt Romney – "Action Speaks Louder than Words"!!! – You are a professional politician that is already following the patterns of Obama and his cronies. Americans are "fed up" with this. Here are 4 points that as an American who loves this country I see that "stink" and are NOTHING but a carbon copy of what we currently have. 1.) You blatantly lie about others and think we "buy your lies" – How can we trust a man to lead us anywhere but exactly where the other party is taking us if you will "outright lie" about others. You will simply surround yourself with liars, just like Obama has, so that you can continue yoru agenda, which in effect leads no where. Truth and "deep committment" are the only actions that will even begin to get us out of this mess. You you are lacking that one ingredient.

  • Jerry F.

Romney is CHICKEN,he knows Newt would make him look the fake that he is,but their will be one time soon that it will be just the 2 of them, and Newt will have his day to show the country why he should be president.

    • minnie

If romney cannot go toe to toe with Newt, how can he go toe to toe with obama. Maybe that is what romney wants. Remember obama and his cronies wanted romnie as a nominee. Mormon is a cult. romnie is a liar.

  • Kenny

And here is the other 3:
2.) You say you have no control over your own organization? You sould exactly like Obama – What garbage, give me and Americans a break! Stupid is as stupid does, we have been "nuked" enough by your nonsense. Time to call a spade a spade – You just support them, are their own "cheerleader" through the silent back door, and will simply NOT tell us what you really believe. To me this is VERY CLEAR! 3.) You play the "avoidance" and "absence" game – You simply avoid "key" things that are "issues with Americans" in hopes they will "go away". They WONT. 4.) You are "afraid" to debate Gingrich because you know "the truth" about things that are "core beliefs" of many Americans will surface and you don't have answers that would even come close to satisfying what many conservative Americans are processing right now. Why do you think so many are undecided? They are peelling back the onion like they should and in you they see very little!!!!!

  • Pegi

Romney knows he'd get his clock cleaned!

  • Patriot7

Sounds like a cop-out to me. Romney must really be afraid to debate Newt using the pretense that this would be unfair to other viable candidates. He doesn't give one hoot for the other candidates. He is fearful that Newt would use hit wit and intellect to make him look like a fool. Romney is just another liberal trying to appear conservative.

  • Wyatt

Because he doesn't have the debate skills no doubt . He's afraid he'll look really bad . But then even Obama with his tele-prompter would look bad up against Gingrich . I haven't decided who to back as of yet but I know Newt Gingrichs skills

  • Abigail Adams

Clearly Romney has revealed to us that he greatly fears Speaker Gingrich. The Speaker is indeed a historian, a professor, a scholar, and much more. Romney is clearly no match for the Speaker– and Romney knows it. Being respectful to "the others," Gov. Romney???— come now :) No doubt I am supporting Speaker Gingrich for President, and I do not have to agree with his every thought and action. Speaker Gingrich is an American who is pro-America; he wants jobs; he wants lower taxes; he wants less government regulation; and he wants a safe America. Gingrich is brave and courageous; he is articulate and decisive. He will stand toe-to-toe against anybody whenever necessary.

    • minnie

Last time around in 2008 Romnie spend 40 million dollars out of his pocket after he spend all his fundraising money on his campaign for president and still did not make nominee. Newt does not have that kind of money but Newt qualifies more for President than rominee. Newt for President in 2012 vote 4 Newt.
