DOJ Blocks South Carolina’s Voter ID Law

The Department of Justice blocked South Carolina’s controversial new voter identification law Friday afternoon, arguing it intentionally discriminates against minority voters.

South Carolina is one of eight states required by the Voting Rights Act to get federal approval for any new voting laws, giving DOJ the power to block it.

The law would require all voters to present photo identification at the ballot box. Conservatives say the laws are meant to protect against voter fraud.

Civil rights groups and Democrats argue the law and others like it that have cropped up nationally intentionally seek to depress turnout from minorities and young voters who are less likely to have those forms of identification — and help Republicans in the process.
The issue could inflame partisan and racial tensions ahead of South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, set for Jan. 21. Some conservatives have attacked the DOJ for blocking state laws on illegal immigration, and this is likely to increase their criticisms.

You have to show your driver's license to cash a check or go through security at the airport. What is wrong with showing it at a voter registration booth? The DOJ has hijacked our voting system.

Wonder if Rick Perry is going to require voter ID's for the state of Texas for 2012?

      YES, he IS!!! THANK GOD!!!!

The reason the DOJ can block the measure is because of the Voting Rights Act which stipulated that any state (at the time of passage there were 8) that has less than 50% of its population registered to vote must allow the DOJ to review any new laws regarding voting in the state. The argument is that those states were purposefully using voter suppression to exclude minorities. I do not agree with the Voting Rights Act or the DOJ’s decision… I’m just giving the reason they are allowed to do this.

Can someone please explain to me, how in the world, any rational, sentient, erudite individual can hold the view that positive ID requirements at the polling booth "intentionally discriminates against minority voters"? You know, every state in the republic makes state-issued identification cards available at absolutely no cost? If requiring a photo ID to vote "intentionally discriminates", how is it then that the states aren't condemned for racial discrimination in issuing driver licenses, or any license for that matter? Why aren't there anti-discrimination lawsuits filed against the local public library since they require ID for issuance of a library card? How many lawsuits has the NAACP or ALCU brought against Walt-Mart for requiring photo ID to write a check?

Can we please stop it with the ridiculous claims of racism?

Our own dear leader doesn't have to show proof of citenship, so why would any other illegal or dead person have to? The time to band together is now ! ! !

That is one of Holder's primary functions; to protect illegals, illegal voters, Black Panthers, "Fast and Furious", and whatever other corrupt mandates espoused by chief thug, Obama. Holder has a lot of opposition but they are doing nothing about his corrupt policies and dereliction and malfeasance of office. Throw him ou, NOW!

    • kenny1801

Yea, Ronnie..Holder is nothing but NOBAMA'S WHIPPING BOY, FALL GUY all rolled into one…..One SLIMEBALL has to protect the OTHER!!!!

  • DHP

Was there any doubt in anyone that this corrupt justice department would challenge the ID requirement? They need to be able to cast all kinds of fraudulent ballots as they have always done. He should not have even been on the ballot in Indiana, and no telling how many other states. And the corrupt justice department will not prosecute these people with their multiple voting or fraudulent voting..

If Obama can't buy the election with a billion dollars then buy all means he will steal it! I mean what else would the 4th best president do? Oops I forgot……. the Narcissist in Chief

The problem, here, as I see it, is, that there is no problem. This is strictly a ploy to try to win at any cost. I don't believe that the Obama Administration cares whether they win or loose. Just as long as the law is suspended long enough for his ACORN pals to engage in voter fraud.

Has anyone noticed that South Carolina is a state Obama needs to win, and it happens to have a Republican Governor and legislature?

The "Real, honest, legal and tax paying citizens" should have more rights than anyone else in this country!! obummer and his goonies seem to think that rights belong to those who cross the border illegally, are liberals and democrats have more rights than anyone in this entire country. They go by the old " you're either with me or against me." If you are against them you have no rights and will never have the same rights as long as the liberal, socialist democrats are in control. Is this a free country with liberty and justice for all? I think not. What a pity that such a small group are doing their very best to destroy this country founded on the rights of the legal citizens of the United States of America and yes, God.
