Did Ron Paul sign off on racist newsletters?

Ron Paul, well known as a physician, congressman and libertarian, has also been a businessman who pursued a marketing strategy that included publishing provocative, racially charged newsletters to make money and spread his ideas, according to three people with direct knowledge of Paul’s businesses.

The Republican presidential candidate has denied writing inflammatory passages in the pamphlets from the 1990s and said recently that he did not read them at the time or for years afterward. Numerous colleagues said he does not hold racist views.

But people close to Paul’s operations said he was deeply involved in the company that produced the newsletters, Ron Paul & Associates, and closely monitored its operations, signing off on articles and speaking to staff members virtually every day.

“It was his newsletter, and it was under his name, so he always got to see the final product. . . . He would proof it,” said Renae Hathway, a former secretary in Paul’s company and a supporter of the Texas congressman.

I suspected as much…………..never met a physician who didn't have to control everything within his (or her) sphere. This added to all his other screwball ideas out to knock him out of the race but knowing his rabid supporters, I surely doubt it.

    • Myrtlelinder

It seems the Presidential race has attracted the country' dregs. I cannot imagine a worse selection than we have running this time.I thought at one time for voting for Paul. I think GOD must have told me, "He won't do." it is beyond my comprehension that and American adult man/physician could write such garbage for public reading.

      • John

You guys/gals believe EVERYTHING you read …

        • Myrtlelinder

I don't think the problem is what we read but the lack of anything to read. There is so little we can find on what any one of them is promoting or what they believe is wrong. What little I have learned, shows little promise in any one of them. Maybe you can impart some wisdom to us, as your underlings. Please feel free to do that.

      • stillmoral

The trouble is you are listening to MSM and reading leftwing newpapers and Romney propaganda machine. If you will really investigate Newt Gingrich, you will find he is an excellent candidate. Yes I know his personal life was a mess, but he seems to have that straightened out now and had a real spiritual awakening. The RNC is trying to destroy him because they want liberal scum Romney to be the candidate. They are afraid of Gingrich because he will bring real change, which is what we need. All the rumors and attacks are orchestrated by Romney and the RNC. They called me for a campaign contribution the other day and I told the RNC they could go to hell because of their weak opposition to Obama and their lackluster showing all around. visit http://www.newt.org for his plans for USA

        • Myrtlelinder

stillmoral, I would like to assure you I don't read "left wing" at all. I am afraid to investigate any of them. I am afraid of what I will find, especially on Romney. The "SHOT" he forced on the teenage is facts not MSM or the left wing. To think I have a president is like, "This is a repeat of what we already have" .I feel sure that none of the 26 who died were yours. I wonder how their parents feel about him.

          • stillmoral

The shot was gardasil and it was Rick Perry of Texas who did that. There was an opt out for parents on that. He later apologized for that and said he did not research it enough before he signed it. You should IMO never be afraid to discover the truth, for the truth is what sets us free. Romney is a RINO and the RINOS are pushing him and he will lose. He is still trying to make Romneycare sound different from Obamacare. He is a liar and I have just discovered that he will not repeal Obamacare and would like each state to adopt his version of healthcare.

          • stillmoral

Please investigate Newt Gingrich's actual record in Congress. He was much vilified because he went after the establishment. My Congressman, who is a Conservative Republican, has an office in the building where I work. When I mentioned to him that I like Newt Gingrich, he told me "He made a lot of enemies" Why do you think he made those enemies? He took down a crooked Dem Speaker of the House, Jim Wright. The Dems and the RINOS hated him for this, which is why they went after him on bogus charges, which there were 84, 83 of which were dropped as completely ridiculous immediately. The one that stood he was later totally exonerated of by the IRS. This was a witch hunt pure and simple.

          • stillmoral

And he was never fined. He agreed to pay the legal costs for this witch hunt. He had to borrow the $300,000 to pay this. He could have taken the money from his campaign funds, but felt it would not be right. Sen. Dole lent him the money. This is the most important election in the history of this nation. We must get it right or we are finished. Newt Gingrich will bring major changes in Washington and in the judiciary. Please do your own investigating. I have done mine and that is why I have come to the conclusion to support Speaker Gingrich.

stillmoral, here is Newt. He is a big govt plant.

            Gingrich: http://www.newswithviews.com/Nelson/kelleigh121.h

Quote from Newt's mentors new age book, The Third Wave. From P2 of above link.

" Toffler believes mankind is entering a new system. To the founding fathers in his book, he wrote, "For the system of government you fashioned including the very principles on which you based it, is increasingly obsolete, and hence increasingly, if inadvertently, oppressive and dangerous to our welfare. It must be radically changed and a new system of government invented, a democracy for the 21st century. For this wisdom, above all, I thank Mr. Jefferson who helped create the system that served us so well for so long, and that now must, in its turn, die and be replaced." " [End]

screwball ideas??? what 0 income taxes?? we are broke, we borrow 40cents of every dollar we spend??? with that in mind to save country we would have to cut govt in half. so closing 900 bases, cutting foreign aid and use that money to save social security, having young people opt out of social security. having sound money, getting rid of FED reserve. the orginization that inflates our money and makes it worthless. these are screwball ideas to you???

follow the money folks, who control the media, who are 3 largest campaign contributers to romeny (hint: global banks), newt (hint: defense contractors) who do you think they are going to listen to.

it is time to wake up, and quite voting for the vote for me and all your dreams will come true canidate. all these big govt canidates have got to be shown the door.

  • Cognitive Dissident

Too bad about Ron Paul being a scum bag.

he's been the strongest voice to echo George Washington's important warning about "foreign entanglements".

I suppose the reality is that he just doesn't like Israel. Because, well, we all know why now.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpgiYe6LToc Roger

Too bad you're a scum bag.

      Don't you remember saying this?

"You'll get farther as a troll without blanketing your opponent from "Go". Try for subtlety, and remember that the otherside is not monolithic in their thinking. Do not help them unify with your firebombs. We should strive to psychologically divide and conquer!"

Coggy, I understand with the bosnian wife and the muslim potlucks you want his weak foreign defense of the US.

But do you have to be so obvious about it? That goes against your own advice.

      • Myrtlelinder

Roger, Why do you try to complicate what you are writing? You should be make your comments very simple so that we who are a little simple, can figure what you are saying without straining our little brains. Just asking??????????try to

    • LocalYokel

Are you yet unaware of US inability to contribute to any foreign cause without incurring deeper national debt . Ron Paul's explanation of his stance applies to all foreign aid for the same reason. How better can he honor his oath of office? He is well aware of Israel's history of being able to "take care of business" when it gets past the political stage with undeniable military success in the same atmosphere of twisted media information that permiates all of the US.
Why are you not better advised with internet search flying high above the trench of media misinformation?

  • Punchy

Oh yea yea yea, Ron Paul is no more racist than Obama is American. This article and the tireless effort to keep dragging it out of the mirky depths is just proof that those who oppose him are grasping pathetically at straws.

    • stillmoral

Sorry, give it up. RP is totally responsible for the content of those newsletter no matter how he tries to lie about it. Just like he lies about bringing home the pork. If he were a serious contender the MSM would go after him tooth and nail with these articles and his totally lackluster career in Congress.

  • SEAN MURRY

    No paul for me.

  • just sayin

Anyone who believes that a man would take a 50 mile drive once a week to his office and not peruse his own newsletter once a month is a "willing dupe" described by Lenin. It would be like catching a shoplifter and their defense was they were removing the items to study them for price comparisons and were going to return them next week when they applied for a job. That's how much sense it makes!

  • Ron Powell

Obama and Holder are two of the most racist people in this country but that doesn't seem to bother anyone and they carry on their racism every day being in the two most powerful positions in the country. That didn't bother the media either, why else would they not make it a big issue involving Jeremiah Wright or the non-prosecution of Black Panthers and other blatant discriminations by the Obamamites? Paul may not be perfect but is heads and shoulders over what we have now.

  • http://www.pepper.net/ PepperdotNet

Good Lord, how many times are they gonna trot out this dead horse?

Even if he was a racist, which he isn't, he'd be 1000 times better than what we have now, and is the only one with real ideas to keep our country from collapsing.

I have read the newsletters in question and they didn't set off a racist red flag for me. Crazy conspiracy type stuff flag, sure, but not racist. If you did not actually read them, you have no basis for an accusation just because you "read a news article about it."

You want racist, read Obama's books, listen to his former pastor, or any other so-called leader of the African-American community. Ron Paul wants to give liberty to all individuals with no regard whatsoever to their ancestry or skin color. That is about as far from racist as you can possibly get.

    • ricbee

      Right on!

    • BOTK

Ok, if he wants liberty, why is he such a vehement opponent of the Civil Rights Act? Oh, wait, that's right. He's for liberty from government, but when it comes to government protecting the liberty of one individual from another individual, well, that's government tyranny.

  • Frank

I have not read the letters, but I heard an interview with someone that has. The letters were published over about 20 years and the "racist" comments were found in some issues during 2 of these years. Ron Paul says he did not do his due diligence before allowing them published with his name on the letter. I've also seen interviews with both Blacks & Jewish people who knew Ron Paul for many years and who have testified that he never seemed racist or prejudicial ever to them or other minority groups. These newsletters occurred when Ron Paul was a full-time busy MD in OB/GYN (I'm sure he worked over 100 hours a week, often delivering babies at night). My take on this: if this is the worst Ron Paul's political enemies can dig up on him some 20-30 years ago, there's not much dirt to dig up & shows he's quite an honorable person.

Said former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin on FOX News on 1/28/12: "(Ron Paul) is the only one who has been so adamantly passionate about doing something about the suffocating debt, about doing something about reining in government growth and actually slashing budgets – $1 trillion a year, he’s been specific about until we get our hands around this….."
If the GOP is the party of limited government, there is only one such Republican in this race. ricbee, Ron has never been racist.

Glad to see you came around. Judging by skin color is so shallow, narrow mined & ignorant.

Glad that you rose above all that. Welcome to the light.

Ron is accused of racism because the supporters of big govt, over pending– Constitution trashers in general, are afraid of Ron. They know his record. They have heard his speeches & know his platform. These people are very aware of Ron's some 30 years of being on the same track with the same message. They know Ron is honest & honorable & would actually do what he says. Ron doesn't say what he does about restoring liberty, sound $, reducing the size of govt & so on just so he can get abused.

He does it because his liberty & that of his fellow citizens is under attack & is in very real danger of going away…

Contrary to the false propaganda proclaiming that Dr. Ron Paul is "not electable", his numbers are rising, his support growing and he stands an excellent chance of winning both the GOP nomination and the 2012 presidential race.

Dr. Paul's opponents are desperate to stop Americans from listening to, and subsequently electing Ron Paul. Opponents of liberty falsely present Ron Paul as "unelectable" to the American people, attempting to plant subconscious seeds doubt of "don't listen to him, don't vote for him in the primaries or caucuses because he'll never win". This strategy is failing as more Americans hear Dr. Paul speak, leading them to contribute to his campaign and vote for him. The American public understands Dr. Paul's common sense approach and trusts him. The other candidates are clearly in the race to serve their egos and personal agendas. The "Dr. Paul is not electable" rumors are deliberately created and spread solely as a calculated attempt to confuse honest, hard-working American with falsehoods such as "Ron Paul is crazy, anti-women, anti-Israel and anti-blacks. He's isolationist, he'll wreck the country, he's anti-government". These are simple "control the masses" fear tactics to try and stop Americans from actually listening to Dr. Paul, hearing his logical and intelligent plan and deciding for themselves.

Dr. Paul went from third in Iowa, to second in New Hampshire and may win South Carolina. The new video about Romney's career, King of Bain, depicts Romney as a deceptive and greedy man with Wall Street connections who made his money destroying viable companies. The film portrays as Romney unnecessarily eliminating jobs of hard-working people while getting rich himself.

Romney is the unelectable candidate, not Dr. Paul.

    6. Dr. Paul not an "isolationist". He is a veteran who believes in only going to war when it has been formally declared per the U.S. Constitution. "We shouldn't have so many injured and in our hospitals because we shouldn't go to war unless it's declared. If it's declared, we should go win it and get it over with." If he were an isolationist, what reason would he be the candidate who gets the most donations from people in the military? Dr. Paul wants to withdraw from the United Nations, which would be the Constitutional thing to do. Thomas Jefferson, founding father and an author of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution stated, "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none." Regarding Israel, Dr. Paul said "Two of the tenets of a true Zionist are 'self-determination' and 'self-reliance…We give $3 billion to Israel and $12 billion to her avowed enemies. How does that help Israel? And in return, we act like her master and demand veto power over her foreign policy." Ron Paul states, "Any kind of racism or anti-Semitism is incompatible with my philosophy." He is against foreign aid period. "I believe that federal foreign aid is absurd. We're broke!… It is ridiculous for us to be borrowing money from China and giving it to Pakistan. I have described foreign aid as taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to rich people in poor countries. I know that many in other nations are hurting, but I also know that the American people are a generous people. While we should end the unconstitutional federal foreign aid program, I would encourage Americans to continue to voluntarily contribute to the needs of other nations."

    5. Dr. Ron Paul would run the U.S. budget like many of us responsibly handle our money at home: Spending less than we make and getting rid of dishonest or unnecessary waste.

    4. Dr. Paul's plans for the country make sense.

    3. Dr. Paul has the right track record, temperament and character to be President. He is mentally clear, firm and tells the truth.

    2. He is the only one who makes sense in the debates. If you watch the debates, he answers questions directly and honestly. The link in this paragraph lists the upcoming debates. Many traditional Democrats might find themselves voting for Dr. Paul after watching him in a few debates.

    1. Dr. Paul is the only person in the 2012 race for president who wants to serve the country. All the other candidates like the idea of the power, status, glory and success. Dr. Paul has humility and a humble approach that no other candidate has.

"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people… They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." – Thomas Jefferson

Look, acording to contemporary PC/BS-ism, anything written by a White person is ipso facto "racist". Now Ron Paul's old newsletters allegedly asserted that (1.) Martin Luther King was as sexually promiscuous as Newt Gingrich (well, almost, anyway) and (2.) that Blacks were responsible for most of the crime in DC and for the Rodney King riots in L.A.. Now the fact that these things are 100% true makes them "politically incorrect", since only falsehoods can pass PC/BS muster. And, since Dr. Paul is a Caucasian, they are automatically "racist" by virtue of the fact that he supposedly either wrote them or signed off on them. The truth must be suppressed at all costs, for the truth is indeed "racist".

  • RevAnders

Let me ask a different question…

It was claimed in one of his letters that the riots in LA only stopped when the blacks had to collect their welfare checks…

How is this racist? And just because it is inflammatory , doesn't make it untrue.

  • Patriot Diva

I fail to see how any of these things are racist. They are unflattering remarks, but honestly I've heard several talking heads say that MLK was a philander with women. That does not mean his work in civil rights is cancelled out, or was not of value. The sad fact is there WERE a lot of blacks on welfare in L.A. and many other cities at the time of the Rodney King beatings. That's the fault of the "Great Society" of LBJ. Prior to creating the welfare state, the black family was strong. It's creation made a father in the home no longer a necessity. The welfare state has hurt the white family as well, but I believe the black family was targeted. We can probably thank one Margaret Sanger for that.

As all the Paulites whine about the truth yet again surfacing, blame the cursed internet and printed documents for revealing his racist past. “Didn’t read them”. What utter BS. If we pretend that statement is the ‘truth’, then he’s either the most naive, lackadaisical “editor” ever to publish a newsletter….or a bald faced liar.

  • 48kindagal

If someone is putting out a newsletter with your name on it, common sense should tell you to go over it with a fine tooth comb before it's published, wouldn't it? I'm afraid Paul's "didn't read them" comment sounds a bit like Obama's "never heard any of those sermons" excuse. It shows laziness, apathy, and bad judgment.
