Federal Court: ‘Tolerance is a Two Way Street’

The Sixth Circuit has ruled in favor of Christian graduate student Julea Ward, who almost three years ago was expelled from a university counseling program for her religious beliefs.

In a strongly worded opinion earlier today, the Sixth U.S. Circuit of Appeals reversed a district court decision in favor of Eastern Michigan University, sending it back for trial along with this message: “A reasonable jury could conclude that Ward’s professors ejected her from the counseling program because of hostility toward her speech and faith ….”

As part of her counseling practicum course in early 2009, Ward had been assigned a potential client who was homosexual and was seeking affirmation of that sexual orientation. Because she was unwilling to violate her own religious beliefs in the context of the counseling relationship, Ward was permitted to refer the client to another counselor — but was told to remain in the counseling program she would have to undergo a “remediation” program that would help her “see the error of her ways.”

When Ward refused, a faculty committee dismissed her from the program. In her subsequent lawsuit, a district federal court ruled in favor of EMU — a ruling that has now been reversed.

Awesome! Finally a court is standing up for the majority of the population who is not gay. Her Christian beliefs were upheld. She performed in Christian and human dignity. I do not, as most conservatives, care if anyone is straight, gay, or bi. Who cares what you do in your private life. You are probably my colleague or even my friend. If Christian values cannot be taught in schools then alternative life syles cannot be taught as well. And what is a REDMEDIATION program? My children are raised, but if this gets into my grandkids' schools there will be another law suit. I am tolerant of your values even though I may not embrace them, that is a Christian. I do not REMEDIATE gays into my lifestyle, that is just stupid, only GOD can guide us in the direction we should pursue…which is why Christians love and tolerate. It is our life style.

    • haditinsd

The key word here is PRIVATE. I am a heterosexual male but if I ever start professing that in parades, on primetime TV or ant PUBLIC event I hope my kids will throw a net over me and tuck me away in some nice asylum.

      • Mari

Exactly!! If one has to flaunt any type of sexual preference, to the extreme, in public then there is something seriously lacking in them or their sexual preference.

    • Ruth

I am taking Counseling courses in order to become a Professional Counselor. One thing we are taught is that if you have a problem with counseling any client, for any reasont, then you are to refer the clilent to another counselor. Therefore, she should not have been penalized for doing what she is taught. I am glad that a court finially stood up for her rights.

      • Mari

Of course! No one, out of respect and concern for the client should ever want to attempt counsel someone that they do not belive they could help. I guess you need remediation? How silly.

  • ccfonten

Thanks be to God for upholding the Freedom of Religion right as outlined in our Constitution in at least one court!
Remediation is nothing more than re-education as practiced by the communists.

  • Bobseeks

GOD does not teach tolerance for evil in any way, shape or form. To tolerate those who practice evil is to send them on the path to hell and is the worst type of hate. This woman was doing exactly what GOD would expect of her and she is to be commended for taking a stand against those who lie to homosexuals about the moral disease that will kill them for eternity.

    • Myrtlelinder

Right, GOD'S people must stand on HIS side never siding with what is wrong, if we have to stand, alone. We must enlighten other on GOD'S WORD and HIS commandments, HIS Will for us, and then let them decide for themselves, what they will do. They cannot be saved by force, they must choose it. We have to make up our minds serve GOD or to go along with he world.

  • guest on this planet

Score one for the white Christian minority

    • nicki

since when does being white have anything to do with being a Christian?also,if you had read any further than the first page, you would would see that this young lady is not in the"white Christian"minority.God bless her for standing up to be counted.

  • KlemKadiddlehopper

Murderers of unborn children and those who practice deviant lifestyles are not looking for, nor do they engage in "tolerance."
That word is simply Libtard code for the validation they seek.

  • Airangel

Good for this Julea Ward for standing up for her belief and rights and not sucumbing to Remediation by the left. Good for the Judge making it known that tolerance is not 1-sided and IS a 2-way street. These gays and atheist do not want tolerance, they want to squash God, the Bible and the whole Christian belief system….ALL OF US need to be like Julea and start fighting!

  • c stan

    Good…
It seems the 6th Circuit Court is in the reality zone…

  • Maxine

we all need to stand together and show them we are stronger then tham we have God on are side

  • Patrioticnut

Hard to believe that a court actually stood on the right side of things in this day and age. I had become so convinced that they had become to leftist and politically correct to decide anything rightly. Good for all involved!

    • Myrtlelinder

      Indeed, unusual!!!

  • Bill

Finally. Thanks to the court for righting a wrong. Putting religion aside, this needed to be overturned to show these professors that many people have values every bit as important and as their own.

  • Bluedresser

That's why Is I support the Alliance Defense Fund. It helps to support our Christian beliefs

  • TOO INFORMED

BIBLE: Basic Information Before Leaving Earth. Too bad our 545 elected officials and the nine Justices in Washington refuse to listen, BUT…they will find the true meaning after it is too late (dead and gone). Freedom is like air; you are only acutly aware of it when it's gone.

    • Myrtlelinder

We need to remember GOD has everything in control even He allows us to stay in the dark, in our doubts, if that is what we want.

    • RonIsDeceived

I agree with your acronym and most of your points, but you ought to know that SOME of our elected officials and SCOTUS Justices DO believe the Bible and DO listen.

  • John

Just once in while the Courts do something right, but in the long run doing something right certainly will not be rewarded.

    • Myrtlelinder

And they take their time doing it!!! By the time you die of old age they get around to the solution.

  • Richard Gibbard

I guess no educational institution is immune from the desire to appease the deviants.

  • Daniel from TN

I applaud the 6th Court of Appeals for this decision. Their reasoning makes logical sense. However, I expect this decision WILL be appealed to the US Supreme Court because it opposes the Gay Agenda.

  • Myrtlelinder

Liberals need to learn that their way is not, the only way. Tolerance is really a two way street.

  • Soy Milk

Here's the deal. I don't believe the bible is the word of god. Period. It was written by man, not god. When you quote the bible, you're quoting man, not god. Understood?

    • Daphney

Soy I glad you don't believe the bible now the deal is the bible was written by men of god, lets face it no man in this time is going to convict himself of his sin. No man today wants to believe that homosexuality is a sin. When I quote the bible I am quoting the men of god!

      • Daphney

Correction: I am glad you don't belive the bible.

    • RonIsDeceived

The Bible is the Word of God. You are free to deny the truth, but the truth is still the truth.

      • Soy Milk

        no it's not, but thanks.

  • guest

Of course it's not "understood" because it's not true, you're wrong as can be, but you have the freedom to believe that if you want to. That's what a great God he is. He could squash you like a bug for saying that if He chose to, you're just too blind to see it.

Don't think that He's going to let you come live in His Heaven unless you repent though, because no sin or wickedness will be allowed there.

    • Soy Milk

i'm going to be just fine after I die. i'm a good person and i believe that i am "this way" for a reason. sure, it would be cool to be attracted to women and therefore marry and procreate; however, that's not the path i'm meant to follow. my attraction to the same sex isn't caused by satan, as most of you will proclaim.

  • GramSam

soy milk, it the Koran the word of Allah? The student was wanting affirmation of their sexual orientation? What they want some one to tell them it's OK you are not abnormal. Call it what you want, but it's just perverts pretending to have sex.

    • Soy Milk

bet you'd never say that to my face.

  • Soy Milk

perhaps i'll just marry a naive christian woman then cheat on her with men. it'll be fun to live a double life. "daddy's little girl" is about to be knocked up by a gay man. ;)

  • diana

soy hope your happy in HELL

    • Soy Milk

i hope your children get killed.

and learn the rules of grammar, loser. It's not "your", it's "you're", as in "you are."

  • RonIsDeceived

Soy Milk just admitted that his gay lifestyle is a CHOICE!

    • Soy Milk

and how did I do that?

  • Riverdweller

"it'll be fun to live a double life. "daddy's little girl" is about to be knocked up by a gay man. ;) "
You admitted it by the above quote from your post. A male who is truly homosexual would not be able to make love to a woman. And that "true" homosexual is really born that way.
Even in the animal kingdom there are some who are born with no urge to mate with the opposite sex. It is extremely rare but it does happen. One I can recall is the 2 male penguins who were devoted to each other. There were several articles about them.

  • RonIsDeceived

This wonderful 6th Circuit Court ruling puts to shame all of the Dave Hunt wannabes who sit out most election days on their "left behinds" and claim to have special gnostic knowledge of an imminent Rapture. They have wasted their God-given time and money on bogus end-times-prediction "ministries" and done nothing to help courageous Christians such as Julea Ward.
Julea Ward got her "day in court" because God blessed and guided the voters who worked to get US Presdents and Senators elected who then appointed and confirmed God-fearing judges.
All of my fellow Christians who have been deceived into NOT voting; by the (dis)likes of Hunt, Relfe, Van Impe, Lindsey, Camping, and other end-times-predicting false teachers; should get off their "left behinds" and vote in every election, from now on.
